A research project for the development of social entrepreneurship and social enterprises

Enabling the Flourishing and Evolution of Social Entrepreneurship for Innovative and Inclusive Society (EFESEIIS)

Context

Social enterprises are seen as creating employment opportunities and satisfying the growing need for social services in a context of decreasing public spending. As a consequence, social enterprises have received a great deal of attention in Europe in recent years, as many countries are interested in finding out the best methods to promote their establishment and success.

General Objective

The ultimate goal of the project was to enable individuals and organizations to fully understand the conditions under which social enterprises start, flourish, and solve societal challenges in a sustainable way.

What we did

Yunus Social Business Centre University of Florence was in charge of coordinating all activities associated with the project. YSBCUF was also directly in charge of the “Survew and Interviews to social entrepreneurs” actity. This involved performing the following tasks:
– Designing a survey involving 1100 social enterprises
– Organising and conducting a laboratory experiment at the University of Florence involving 74 for profit and social entrepreneurs
– Data collection and analysis
YSBCUF was also in charge of defining an “Enabling Eco-System.” This was done by performing the following tasks:
– Reviewing and analyzing the literature
– Creating an analytical framework — based on the capability approach of Amartya Sen — that explores the relationship between Social Enterprises and the ecosystem
– Creating a matrix and defining four main ecosystems
– Policy recommendations
