Pistoia Social Business City

PSBC is a comprehensive program which involves both research and practical activities aiming at the promotion of social enterprise as an efficient solution for social and/or environmental issues on the territory of Pistoia. The whole Program is carried on by Yunus Social Business Centre University of Florence, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Pistoia e Pescia e Fondazione Un Raggio di Luce Onlus.

The main objective of the Program is creating a facilitating system for the raising of efficient, sustainable enterprises oriented towards the resolution of social or environmental local problems, through the involvement of students and young people, citizens, local entrepreneurs and local administrators in the activities it carries on.

Pistoia Social Business City – Activities 2015

Research on social enterprises from Pistoia: the results. The meeting took place on the last 13th July 2015 at Camera di Commercio di Pistoia in order to present the activities and the goals pursued by the PSBC Program and  the results of the second edition of Pistoia social enterprises mapping and analysis. Besides local administrators, some professional associations delegates participated to the meeting as well, such as Confcooperative and the delegation of Cesvot Pistoia.

Training project “Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change” (2014/2015). At the end of the meetings cycle, as in the previous edition, the groups of students involved into the educational project have presented their entrepreneurial ideas projects to a Committee which selected the ten finalists of the contest. After a phase of online voting, the first three groups have been proclaimed. The award ceremony took place the 21st of May 2015, at the Auditorium Terzani of Biblioteca San Giorgio in Pistoia. The first prize winners from competition were awarded a trip to Barcelona, a city that is running – as Pistoia is doing – the Social Business City Program, to visit the most innovative local social businesses; the second placed group will have the chance to go to Milan and to visit EXPO 2015; and the third place group will be presented with a voucher for a bookstore of Pistoia. Number of projects presented: 20. Number of projects accepted: 20.

Training internship “Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change”. From the 15th to the 30th of June 2015 five students from Forteguerri High School of Pistoia undertook a training internship at Pistoia Social Business City Program. The activities they worked at were focused on the acquisition of notions about Social Business and Microcredit, about the instruments for design a social business idea and for the analysis of a business venture. The students also worked at a brief analysis about the territory needs, with the administering of a questionnaire to a sample of under 35 people from Pistoia. From the analysis of the collected data students extracted a final report. They also had the opportunity to visit two social businesses of the province of Pistoia.

Pistoia Social Business City – Activities 2014

Training project “Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change” (2014/2015). At the end of the meetings cycle, as in the previous edition, the groups of students involved into the educational project have presented their entrepreneurial ideas projects to a Committee which selected the ten finalists of the contest. After a phase of online voting, the first three groups have been proclaimed. The award ceremony took place the 17th of May 2014 at La Fabbrica delle Emozioni, a property belongs to the Municipality  of Pistoia. The first group classified  won a travel to Glasgow during which they visited several Scottish Social Businesses, the second one won an educational travel to Napoli to visit various non-profit local organizations and the third group won a  voucherfor the purchase of books. Number of projects presented: 28. Number of projects accepted: 27.

Training project “Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change” (2014/2015). In the month of October 2014  the third edition of the training project “Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change” started. Institutes involved: Scientific High School “Coluccio Salutati” (Montecatini), Professional Institute “Luigi Einaudi” (Pistoia), Technical and Commercial Institute “Filippo Pacini” (Pistoia), Technical Institute “Francesco Marchi” (Pescia), Social-economic High School “Niccolò Forteguerri” (Pistoia). Number of classes involved: 15; number of students involved: about 300.

Training internship “Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change”. From the 9th to the 18th of June 2014 four students from Forteguerri High School of Pistoia undertook a training internship at Pistoia Social Business City Program. The activities they worked at were focused on the acquisition of notions about Social Business and Microcredit, about the instruments for  the design of a social business idea and for the analysis of a business venture. The students also worked at realize a brief analysis about the territory needs, with the structuring and the administering of a questionnaire to 70 under 30 people from Pistoia. From the analysis of the collected data  students extracted a final report.

Workshops on Social BusinessFree introductive workshops on Social Business. Number of first-level workshops carried out: 3. Number of participants: about 40. The first and the third workshops took place at Pistoia Social Business City Program office, while the second one took place at La Casa di Zela (Quarrata), seat of the Orto Sociale “La Querciola” project. Social entrepreneurs involved: Rossano Ciottoli (President of the social cooperative “Gemma”), Stefania Corrocher (Owner “Oasi Baugiano” farm), Aurelio Grecomoro and Romina Breschi (President and Council member of social cooperative “Gli Altri”).

Second level workshops. Cycle of second level meetings focused  on a specific subject, close to Social Business or to enterprise issue in general, carried out by experts of the sector considered. The meeting organized  during 2014 was based on “How to start-up an enterprise”. Number of second level workshop held: 1. Number of participants: 11. Involved experts: Marcella Capponi (consultant for start-up support services for several professional associations).

Mapping and analysis of Pistoia third sector. The Centre has carried out for the second year consecutive a mapping and research on the third sector of Pistoia, focusing mainly on the analysis of about 60 organizations  operating in the territory of Pistoia, considering both social cooperatives and social enterprises ex-d.lgs 155/2006.

Pistoia’s social enterprises  and social cooperatives handbook. Considering the data gathered thanks to the Pistoia third sector mapping and analysis, an handbook had been made up. It want to be an efficient and instant guide for citizens where to find a collection of basic information about these organizations. The document, that can be downloaded from the Yunus Social Business Centre website, will be periodically updated.

Meeting with local administrators of the territory of Pistoia. The meeting took place the 11th of July 2014 at Pistoia Social Business City Program office in order to present the activities and the goals pursued by the PSBC Program and  the results of the first edition of Pistoia third sector mapping and analysis. Besides local administrators, some professional associations delegates participated  to the meeting as well, , such as Confcooperative and Legacoop, and furthermore the delegation of Cesvot Pistoia.

Pistoia Social Business Day 2014. The 21st of September 2014 the Pistoia Social Business Day second edition was organised.  The event is focused on social entreprise, third sector and innovation issues. As for the first edition, the initiative took place in Pistoia at La Cattedrale, expositive area ex-Breda.  It was composed by an expository area for the third sector organizations and an academic part with a plenary conference in the morning and thematic workshops in the afternoon. Total workshops participants: 180. Number of workshops: 6 and 2 dedicated to children entertainment.

Network with local actors. The meetings up to strengthen the relationships with the institutional, economic and social actors of the territory were numerous in the 2014. The Yunus Social Business Centre took part, as a moral guaranteeing, to the Orto Sociale “Querciola” project and as partner to the “Riciclando S’Impara” project, an educational path dedicated to those men and women who are in a situation of social marginality and vulnerability.

Pistoia Social Business City – Activities 2013

Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change (School year 2012/2013). Students presented their own projects to the judging committee that chose 10 finalists of the competition. As a result of an online voting phase, 3 winner groups were proclaimed. The award ceremony was held on Saturday, May 11th, 2013 in Pistoia. The first prize was a one-week trip in Bangladesh for visiting Prof. Yunus and some local projects. Second and third prize were book vouchers. Total High Schools involved: 3 in Pistoia and 3 in the province of Pistoia; total of classes involved: 15; total of students involved: 261; Total projects accepted in competition: 29.

Youth and Social Business: becoming agents of change (School year 2013/2014). Second edition of the school project aimed to spread the knowledge of social business. High Schools involved: Liceo Scientifico “Coluccio Salutati” (Montecatini), Istituto Professionale Luigi Einaudi (Pistoia), Istituto Tecnico Commerciale Filippo Pacini (Pistoia), Istituto Tecnico Aldo Capitini (Agliana), Istituto Onnicomprensivo (San Marcello Pt.). Total of classes involved: 13.

Project “Re-inventing our economy”. In collaboration with ViBanca and with the participation of 34 German students from Hochschule Osnabrück (Germany) – University of applied Sciences (WiSo). A cycle of workshops aimed at university students with the objective of spreading knowledge of social business.

Mapping and analysis of third sector. Mapping of a total of 444 organizations (Social Enterprises, Social Cooperatives, Voluntary Associations and Associations of Social Promotion) within the province of Pistoia. Data analysis and reporting.

Event Pistoia Social Business Day. This event was held on October 5, 2013, at the exhibition centre La Cattedrale, former Breda area, in order to attract the attention of citizens and practitioners toward social economy and social business. It included both an exhibition and an academic area. Total participating organizations: 25; Total workshops organized: 9; Total workshop participants: 200.

Networking. Numerous meetings with institutional and economic local actors, analysis of business ideas and consultancy for new social entrepreneurs.

Meeting with local administrators of Province of Pistoia. Held on November 26, 2013, in order to present the activities and purposes of PSBC and gather feedbacks from local administrators involved.


Pistoia Social Business City – Activities 2012

Office opening. In February 2012 opening of the PSBC headquarter in 1, Via Abbi Pazienza, Pistoia, in the very city centre.

Inauguration ceremony. On the July 11th, 2012, is inaugurated the “Pistoia Social Business City” Program at the exhibition centre La Cattedrale, former Breda area, to the presence of the Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and the Major of Pistoia Samuele Bertinelli, which was handed the plate “Pistoia Social Business City”. Total attendance: over 400.

Youth and Social Business: becoming active agents of change (school year 2012/2013). Project aimed at the third, fourth and fifth classes of High Schools of Province of Pistoia for the promotion of the social business knowledge. 6 High Schools involved: Liceo economico e sociale “Niccolò Forteguerri” (Pistoia), Istituto Commerciale di Stato per i Servizi Commerciali, Turistici e Sociali “Luigi Einaudi” (Pistoia), Istituto Tecnico Commerciale Sperimentale “Filippo Pacini” (Pistoia), Istituto Comprensivo (S.Marcello Pt.), Liceo Statale “Carlo Lorenzini” (Pescia), Liceo Scientifico “Coluccio Salutati” (Montecatini). Number of classes involved: 15. Number of students involved: 261.

Workshop on Social Business: introductory seminars on Social Business. A series of workshops targeted at university students and aimed at spreading the knowledge of Social Business. Total of first-level workshops organized: 4. Total participants: 60. Social enterpreneurs hosted as guest speakers: Sauro Gori (President of Cooperativa Sociale “In cammino”); Francesco Alibrandi (owner of “Falegnameria Fagioli”); Andrea Mati (President of Cooperativa Sociale “Giardineria italiana”); Silvia Andreini ( President of Cooperativa Sociale “Gulliver”).

Mapping and analysis of third sector: Research design and definition of the survey to be submitted to the no profit organizations operating in the Province of Pistoia .

Networking with local stakeholders: local networking with the main goal of promoting social business, PSBC’s awareness and integration among local stakeholders. Good relationships have been established with local institutions, companies, no profit organizations and other local stakeholders.
